This is one of the more interesting bits of news out of the dog days of this summer.
The naming of the former NHL heavyweight champ as Deputy Leader of the Green Party.
So how about it?
Contemplating this news, I would go so far as to say that this is probably the first time I have looked at the Green Party as a serious player on the Canadian political scene.
Laraque has had a very impressive record of community service during his hockey career, most notably in the Canadian stops in Edmonton and Montreal. His career started coming off the rails mostly because of Georges' obstinate refusal to beat people up who were either smaller than him or didn't want to fight.
He jumped from the Montreal Canadiens into the campaign to help Haiti this spring without missing a shift and continues to support his other favourite causes, such as humane treatment of animals and active lifestyles..
He may be somewhat lacking in political experience but he definitely packs a punch when it comes to credibility, integrity and leadership skills. He certainly stacks up favourably against most of our current politicians in terms of these qualities.
Who knows? could be interesting times ahead.
